5 Tips for What to Wear for Outdoor Family Photos | Collierville Family Photographer
I let all of my clients know that the most stressful part (if that’s even what you want to call it) of a photo shoot with me is figuring out what everyone is going to wear. Not because you have to go get all new outfits for everyone (although it is tempting) but because it does make a difference in how your final gallery all comes together. So I have put together 5 things to keep in mind when putting together your family's outfits.
1. Mom should choose her outfit first
In most cases, moms are wanting family photos because they aren't in many family photos and they want to document them with their children. So I encourage moms to pick an outfit that they feel fabulous in and then choose everyone else's outfit based on those colors.
2. Avoid Matchy-Matchy
While you want to coordinate key colors, you don't want everyone in jeans and a white shirt. That was so 1980s. So focusing on neutrals with pops of color, mixing textures and adding accessories is a great way to add visual interest to your photographs.
3. Not everyone should wear patterns
This something that is sometimes hard to notice, but if everyone is wearing plaid or stripes it can make for an extremely busy photograph and can be a bit distracting. Try to have one person in a pattern and then others in complimentary solid colors.
4. Colors to avoid
While neons are certainly not ideal because it can cause color casts, try and also avoid green if your location is in a field type setting. There is already so much green in the grass and the trees that it can really result in a dull photo when you are also wearing green.
5. Match your home decor
This is something that most overlook but if you plan on displaying your images prominately in your home, it helps if the colors in it coordinate with your home decor. So just look at the walls of your home for inspiration on what to wear!
These are just a few tips to give you inspiration when picking out outfits for your family photo session. But above all, you and your family should be comfortable and confident!
